1*     A GWR double-sided enamel sign lettered “GWR. Parcels Received Here For All Parts”. Red lettering shaded black on white. 18”x12”. A little restoration.

 

2*     A London Brighton & South Coast Railway coloured CARRIAGE-PANEL “The Sunny South Coast And The Isle of Wight”. The central panel displays a system map on either side of which are adverts. 25½”x9½”. Good, original condition.

 

3*     A Great Northern Railway polished wood publicity-rack lettered in gold “Great Northern Railway, Please Take One, Quickest Route Kings Cross To Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, Edinburgh And Scotland Generally”. 22”x15”x6”. In very good, original condition.

 

4*     A BR(S) enamel DOORPLATE “Season Tickets” (2 lines). Flanged, 18”x6”. VGC.

 

5*     A Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway HANDLAMP with a triple pie-crust top and brass-plated “Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway. Cuddington For Winsford Junction”. A small oval brass plate is lettered “G. Hildred. Ironmonger & Tinsmith, Hainton Square, Grimsby”. Correct style reservoir, burner and reflector. In fine, original condition. Note Cuddington station, on the Northwich-Chester line, was the junction for the Winsford branch. It opened in 1870.

 

6       A London Brighton & South Coast Railway WAGONPLATE lettered “London Brighton & South Coast Railway. 4361. To Carry 6 Tons”. Oval cast-iron, 14¾”x9”. Unrestored.

 

7*     A LNER enamel Lamp Tablet “CRAIGELLACHIE”. White on blue. Rectangular, 18”x5”, with a wider top flange. VGC. Note Craigellachie station, ex GNSR, opened as “Strathspey Junction” in 1863, was renamed “Craigellachie Junction” in 1864; “Craigellachie” in 1904, and closed in 1968.

 

8*     A London Chatham & Dover Railway cast-iron signal finial clearly impressed “LCD” and “349”. 26¼” tall. Repainted white.

9*     A Great Eastern Railway hand-engraved single-line brass-faced steel TABLET “Snettisham-Dersingham 12”. Polished. VGC. A section immortalised by John Betjamen that nevertheless closed in 1969. It was on the King’s Lynn to Hunstanton line. See Lots 188, 314 and 522, which together afford a probably unique opportunity to collects tablets from the four sections on this line. This particular tablet, being hand-engraved is of a very rare style.

 

10*   A Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway full case copper station lamp with four sloping sides one of which bears a blue etched name tablet “COLE for BRUTON” (cracked). A Midland Railway pattern lamp with a decorated double chimney; finial; metal vessel stamped “M R Co Gas”; burner, and glass funnel. 37½” tall. Polished. Note Cole for Bruton station, between Templecombe and Evercreech Junction, opened in 1862 and closed in 1966.

 

11*   A London Tilbury & Southern Railway original gold leaf full Company title coat of arms transfer mounted on a wooden shield. This is the final device and illustrates in the centre the gateway of Tilbury fort flanked by the shields of London; Essex and the white horse of Kent. 15”x18”.

 

12*   A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signalbox wood-cased Tyers sloping-front permissive block instrument, from the Dearne Valley Railway. It bears ivorine labels “Grimethorpe South” and “Dn-Line”. Unrestored. (See Lot 138). Note The Dearne Valley Railway opened in 1909 to operate a line from Hemsworth to Black Carr. It was worked first by the HBR, then by the LYR until grouping into the LMS in 1923.

 

13*   A cloth ARMBAND embroidered white on red “Midland & Gt. Northern Joint Railway Pilotman” (in 3 lines). Leather straps, no buckles. 15”x3¼”. In good, used condition.

 

14*   A Caledonian Railway curved front 5-compartment china condiment dish. 9½” long. Lettered in blue “Refreshment Rooms Perth”. VGC.

 

15     A Midland Railway cylindrical ticket date-stamping machine. A rectangular brass plate on the top is lettered “Pratchitt Brothers Manufacturers, Carlisle, England. M R Co.” In original condition.

 

16     A Great Central Railway 2 gallon oil-can stamped “GCR” and brass-plated “GCR Engrs. Dept. Meadowhall”. 17” tall and complete with its cork. In good, original condition. A location between Sheffield and Rotherham.

 

17*   A Southern Railway enamel station sign “To The Ferry – Ferry Boat” from either Dover or Folkestone. Flangeless, 48”x12”, with a few well-repaired chips.

 

18*   A London Brighton & South Coast Railway pattern tail lamp bearing a “SRA.185” brass plate. Stamped “185” and “396”, it has a wide brass front lens, a red bullseye, a pie-crust top and top handle. Complete with vessel, SR brass/ceramic burner and reflector. 17¼” tall. In fine, original condition.

 

19*   A Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway full Company title framed and glazed poster advertising “Nottingham & Colwick Park Steeplechases May 1893. W. Pollitt, General Manager”.Blue lettering on white. 27”x41½”. Some wear.

 

20*   A London Chatham & Dover Railway brass HANDBELL cast “LC & DR” in ornate capitals on the side. A polished wood handle. “14” engraved on the collar. 14” tall, complete with clapper. In fine, original condition.

 

21*   A Southern Railway enamel DOORPLATE “Inspectors”. Flangeless (at one time in an aluminium frame), 19”x5¼”.

 

22*   A GWR metal framed opal glass pre-Grouping Lamp Tablet lettered “ST THOMAS” black on white. With hanging brackets. Several cracks. 18”x3½”. Note Exeter St Thomas station opened as “St Thomas” in 1846 and was renamed in 1897.

 

23*   A BR(E) enamel sign, in the rare purplish-blue, lettered “British Railways Engines Must Not Pass This Board Without Authority. By Order”. Flangeless, 12”x26”, with only minor edge and hole chipping.

 

24*   A Great Central and Great Northern Joint Railway upholstered straight-backed station master’s mahogany chair. The initials “GC & GN” are clearly carved into the lower backrest. VGC.

 

25*   A North Eastern Railway enamel Signalbox Board “HAXBY ROAD”. Cream on chocolate, 34”x9”, vgc; together with a pressed steel oval black and white telegraph sign 20”x13”. Both mounted on a display board. The first signal box on the York-Scarborough line.

 

26     A London Brighton & South Coast Railway large Webb & Thompson train staff with brass plates engraved “Hardham Junction” and “Petworth”. 26½” long, with Annetts key end, and in good original condition. A section on the long closed Petersfield-Pulborough line.

 

27*   A “Great Western and London And North Western Railway Joint Line” cast-iron Trespass sign. February 1885. 14 lines of text. 26”x21”. Face-repainted.

 

28*   A LMS (Caledonian pattern) copper crossing lamp, rebuilt at St. Rollox. Stamped “LMS No. 241” on the chimney cowl, it has four bullseye lenses, top handle, large circular copper vessel, burner and reflector. A rare lamp.

 

29*   A Southern Railway enamel POSTERBOARD-HEADING lettered “Road Services In Association with the Southern Railway” in three styles of lettering including ‘sunshine’ style. Rectangular, 26”x5”, with some edge chip restoration.

 

30*   A TOTEM “HOLT”. BR(E) dark blue half-flanged. VGC. A scarce totem from the ex M & GNJR station, between Melton Constable and Weybourne, opened in 1884 and closed in 1964. (see Lot 291).

 

31     A South Eastern & Chatham Railway oak, glazed POSTERBOARD with its original “SE & CR” blue and white enamel heading plate (26”x5”, a little restoration) and displaying 8 SE & CR handbills. On the reverse are paper labels lettered “SR Fragile. Halling”. (Rochester-Maidstone line).

 

32*   A Great Northern Railway 3-aspect HANDLAMP with a double pie crust top. The body, stamped “GNR 16513”, bears a brass plate “London & North Eastern Railway.Insp.Banks.Don.Minl.” (Doncaster Mineral). The reducing-cone is also stamped “GNR 16513”, and bears an oval brass Polkey maker’s plate. A correct style vessel stamped “GNR 15587”, burner; reflector and all glasses. In fine condition.

 

33     A chromed steel single-line key token “Stoke Junction-Allhallows”. In original condition. An ex SR section on the southern shore of the Thames Estuary closed in 1961.

 

34     A North British Railway leather CASHBAG bearing a brass plate engraved “NBR Whitemyre”. In good, original condition. Note Whitemyre Junction signalbox was near Dunfermline on the northern side of the Forth Bridge.

 

35*   A GWR brass TENDERPLATE engraved “Great Western Railway Company 1740 Swindon Works 1907” and stamped “3500 Gallons”. Oval, 11¼”x8¼”, lightly polished. As carried by the tender attached initially to “Saint Benedict”; then to “Knight of the Bath”; “Ashton Court”; “Saint George”; “Fawley Court”; and “Roumanian Monarch” amongst others. It was cut up in 1959.

 

36     A Southern Railway enamel station sign “Gentlemen Messieurs”. Flangeless, 30”x12”, with minor edge-chip restoration only.

 

37     A South Eastern & Chatham Railway sailor’s white, woollen jumper with woven initials “SE & CR” and “041” on the front. VGC.

 

38*   A LNER eyesight testing kit. A mahogany box, 10”x7”, opens out to reveal a spectrum of coloured worsteds for eyesight testing. With the original leaflet. The hinges of the lid are stamped “LNER”. Unusual.

 

39     A Great North of Scotland Railway tinplate carrying-box both sides painted “GNSR” in original cream lettering. Also stamped “GNSR”. 12”x7¾”x5½”.

 

40*   A South Eastern & Chatham Railway full case Station lamp with its original etched blue glass nameplate “SMEETH”. An opal glass topped lamp with finial (somewhat worn); complete with a vessel. Ex Clapham Museum (see Lot 267).

 

41*   A POSTER “Forging Ahead”. Terence Cuneo. q.r. Minor creasing only.

 

42*   A South Eastern & Chatham Railway brass Sykes signalbox bell plunger with a curved enamel plate lettered black on white “Ash. SER”. VGC. A location between Farnborough and Guildford.

 

43*   A Dundee & Arbroath Joint Railway full title enamel Trespass sign. 1918. 12 lines of text. Signed J. Blackburn, Secretary, Caledonian Railway Company, and J.A.S. McLaren, Secretary, N.B. Railway Company. Lettered black on white and in a frame. 21½”x16½”. In good, original condition. Exceedingly rare. The D & AJR opened in 1838, was vested jointly in the Caledonian and NBR in 1880, retained its identity under the LMS and LNER, and was nationalized in 1948.

 

44*   A Pullman brass table lamp stamped “GWLADYS”, with its original celluloid shade. VGC. Note Gwladys was a 1932 built composite car used exclusively on the SR and BR(S) in 6-Pul units. It was withdrawn about 1965 and scrapped.

 

45*   A LMS copper Sugg station lamp stamped “LMS 54” on the side, bearing a LNER enamel ‘horseshoe’ lamp tablet lettered black on white “SANDY” (edge-chipping only). The lamp is complete with enamel shade, burner, mantles, glass globe and operating-lever with chains. VGC. Sandy, on the ECML, was an ex GNR station between Biggleswade and St. Neots, opened in 1850.

 

46*   A South Eastern Railway framed and glazed paper notice “South Eastern Railway Rules & Regulations In Locomotive & Carriage & Wagon Department, Ashford 1868”. In a modern frame, 19”x24”, in good condition.

 

47     A Piccadilly & Brompton Railway lamplighter’s lamp stamped “P & B” on the back handle. A square lamp with attached lighter on chain. Complete with vessel and reflector and in good, original condition. A rare lamp from the early days of the London Underground system.

 

48*   A Furness Railway enamel gate notice lettered white on blue “FR. Warning. Gates Must Not Be Opened Until It Has Been Ascertained That The Line Is Clear In Both Directions”. 18” square. The blue background repainted.

 

49     A Louth & East Coast Railway cast-iron 3-hole RAILCHAIR  cast “LECR 1877”. Unrestored. The L & ECR opened in 1877 to operate a line from Louth to Sutton-on-Sea. It was purchased by the GNR in 1908.

 

50*   A GWR brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE “1438”. As carried by the GWR Collett 0-4-2T “4838” built at Swindon in August 1934 under Lot 288 at cost of £2,255. Initially allocated to Reading, she was a longtime Stourbridge engine (1936-1957), during which time she was renumbered ‘1438’ in October 1946, then Oswestry until withdrawal in November 1962 to be cut up by John Cashmore of Great Bridge, Staffordshire on 17th October 1963. The plate is face-polished and repainted only.

51     A GWR Jigsaw “Historic Totnes”. c.200 pieces. Complete, and made up on board for viewing. With its original orange slip-case box which is in very good condition.

 

52     A Great Northern Railway cast-iron sign “Beware Of The Trains. GNR”. 24”x12”. Unrestored.

 

53     A Great Eastern Railway rosette horse-brass engraved “GER”. 2½” diameter.

 

54*   A Southern Railway enamel sign “Passengers With First Class Pullman Reservations Only”. Flangeless, 18”x12”, some good edge restoration.

 

55*   A Great Northern Railway complete Home Somersault signal from Grantham. A wooden post (10’8” from ground level), with GNR finial, wooden signal arm, spectacle plate with intact glass lens, steel ladder with safely hoop and lamp. Complete with all other fittings – back blinder, balance weight etc. They include GNR Nos. S1/4/9/10/11/12/13/14/30. The signal will be sold in situ, removal at the expense and risk of the buyer. 56*   An Oxford & Aylesbury Tramroad opal glass lamp name Tablet “WOTTON”. Rectangular, etched black on white, 13¼”x4”. Good condition. A rare Tablet from the furthermost outpost of the Metropolitan system. Wotton, a Met/GC station, was on the Brill Branch from Quainton Road. It opened in 1872 and closed in 1935. The Oxford and Aylesbury Tramroad took over the privately built (1871) Brill branch in 1894, was leased to the Metropolitan Railway in 1899 then vested in the Met & GC Joint in 1906.

 

57*   A North Eastern Railway diamond china dish displaying the full colour Company crest with a light blue scroll lettered in black “N E Ry Hotels Dept”. A royal blue border, 7¼”x4½”. Good condition. This pattern of china was used at the Royal Station Hotel, York.

 

58*   A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway circular copper signal lamp stamped “LYR” on the sloping top, and “LYR S.1161” on the hinge. Complete with its LYR (stamped) interior lamp. Complete, if a little worn in places.

 

59     A Great Northern Railway enamel station ‘Running-In’ board “BARDNEY”. White on blue, framed 99”x18”. A station on the Lincoln-Boston line, Bardney opened as “Bardney And Wragby” in 1848; was renamed in 1881, and closed in 1970.

 

60*   A Great Northern Railway copper full case station lamp with two adjacent black on white opal glass name tablets “GRANTHAM” (one glazed panel missing). 29” tall, plus its original brackets. Complete with a circular brass vessel; burner; glass globe and copper reflector.

 

61*   A Metropolitan Railway original gold leaf coat of arms transfer on board. This is the final device that adorned the steam and electric locomotives, and coaches. A quartered shield, surrounded by crimson and ermine mantling, displays the arms of London; Middlesex; Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. 22” square. Good condition.

 

62*   An East Kent Railway HANDLAMP with two thumb triggers and its “Linley Engineering Co”. plate on the side. Recovered from Snowdown Colliery. Unrestored, and rare. Note The East Kent Light Railway opened a line from Shepherdswell to Sandwich Road in 1912 and remained independent until nationalized in 1948.

 

63*   A colourfully pictorial small enamel advertising sign “Ogdens St Julien Tobacco”. Framed, 21”x33”. Good condition.

 

64*   A London & South Western Railway Sykes oil-filled fogman’s signal repeater. Red and yellow small signal arms. No oil, otherwise very good (see Lot 418).

 

65*   A magnificent Great Central Railway carved and painted wooden crest, from the Grimsby Docks Directors’ Room. 46”x30”. I think this was almost certainly a paddle-steamer box crest.

 

66*   A Highland Railway brass-faced steel single-line Tablet “Forres Junction-Dunphail 11”. VGC. From the Forres-Boat of Garten line.

 

67     A pair of South Eastern & Chatham Railway 4-wheeled rail-mounted pitch-pine timber support trolleys with a wooden puller marked “SE & CR”. On a section of rail. From the carpenters shop and saw-mill at Ashford goods yard. Each trolley is 29”x21”x30” tall. In good, original condition.

 

68*   A South Eastern & Chatham Railway untitled enamel sign “Notice. No Passengers Allowed On The Platform Without A Ticket For The Train”. Black on white, flangeless 42”x27”, some restoration.

 

69     A GWR fire-appliance canister lettered “GWR No. 5 Fire Appliance……..” on a red background. With cap, top-handle and its original metal cradle. The whole 16” tall and in good, unrestored condition.

 

70     A Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway locoman’s long-nosed oil can stamped “S & DJR”. A brass screw cap. In good, original condition.

 

71*   An 0 gauge officially mounted model of the Advanced Passenger Train consisting of 3 cars – driving, centre and power. 50½” long. VGC.

 

72*   A North Eastern Railway enamel DOORPLATE “Porters’ Room”. Chocolate on cream, 20”x5½”. Overall very good.

 

73*   A BR metal wall-mounted Platform-ticket machine with an ivorine plate “Insert Three 2p Coins”. With a reel of tickets and in working order. 13” wide, 35” tall, with a repainted face. From Dover Priory station.

 

74*   A London Brighton & South Coast Railway printed tinplate notice “London, Brighton & South Coast Railway. Warning To Staff…….” (18 lines of text) William Forbes, General Manager. 12½”x17”. Original, slightly tired, condition.

 

75*   A Midland Railway Signalbox Board “THURMASTON”. Wood with metal letters, 58½”x10¼”, in good original condition. A signal box 2½ miles north of Leicester on the Midland main line. It first opened in 1870; was replaced on 31st December 1881, and again on 9th January 1898; closure coming on 12th September 1973.

 

76*   A LNER enamel ARMBAND lettered dark blue on white “LNER. Lieutenant Fire Brigade”. An unusual convex rectangular armband. No straps, otherwise good.

 

77*   A South Eastern & Chatham Railway 3-aspect HANDLAMP from the Canterbury & Whitstable line. A brass plate on the reducing cone is lettered “SE & CR. G2063”. The body bears a rectangular brass plate with scalloped corners “TYLER HILL CROSSING”. A rectangular front lens. A SE & CR (stamped) rape-oil vessel; and reflector. Complete with all glasses. Stripped of paint.

 

78     A Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway interior wall lamp, the backplate stamped twice “M & GNJR”. An ornate brass burner, glass funnel but no reflector. 16” tall, partially restored.

 

79     A Great Northern Railway lampman’s wooden yoke lettered in rather indistinct white paint “LNER. BASFORD & B”. With carrying-chains and hooks. Note Basford And Bulwell station, north of Nottingham, opened as “New Basford” in 1876, was renamed almost immediately; “Basford North” in 1953, and closed in 1964.

 

80*   A TOTEM “CANTERBURY WEST”. BR(S) light green, fully-flanged. A repaired edge chip at one end, otherwise very good. A scarce totem from the ex SER station opened as “Canterbury” in 1846 and renamed in 1899.

 

81*   A very unusual LNER double-sided illuminated box sign lettered white on blue “Way Out And Platforms 1,2,3 & 4” on one side. “Platform 5” on the other. In very good condition and working. 24½”x8”x12” tall.

 

82     A LMS steel tyre gauge stamped “ASTON” and liberally engraved in red with lots of wording about Royal Scots; Claughtons, Precursors etc. 65”x3¼”. Most unusual.

 

83*   A North Eastern Railway framed and glazed paper notice “North Eastern Railway. Do Not Spit. Penalty For First Offence £2”. 14”x12”. A little staining, otherwise good.

 

84*   A Great North of Scotland Railway 10-tier tinplate luggage label rack stamped “GNSR”. A brass maker’s plate “Wm. Shirras Aberdeen”. Contains a selection of GNSR labels. 25”x23”x11” tall. In good, used condition.

 

85     A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway full coloured CARPET. The centre displays the full Company title coat of arms, the remainder decorated in red and black. 35”x86”. Slightly worn.

 

86     A GWR Jigsaw “The Torbay Express”. c.375 pieces. Complete with one piece replaced and one damaged. Made up on board for viewing. With its original fair condition blue lift-lid large box.

 

87     A Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway ½ pint clear glass beer-bottle clearly embossed “M S & L Rly” in large serif capitals on the side. Used but not chipped.

 

88*   A London Transport square enamel station sign “EUSTON”. Red, white and blue. Flangeless, 22”x28”, in good condition.

 

89*   A Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 4-aspect HANDLAMP, the reducing-cone and the body both displaying oval brass plates engraved “S & DJR 6518”. The reducing-cone is also stamped “MR   Co”, and the body “B” (Bath). One internal glass broken, otherwise complete.

 

90*   A North Pembrokeshire & Fishguard Railway 12” roundhead fusee movement wall clock, the original face lettered “N.P & F.R. W. Wray & Son New Street Birmingham”. The cabinet also has its ivorine numberplate “GWR 1793”. In full working order. Note The NP & FR opened in 1895 to operate the line from Rosebush to Fishguard in West Wales. It was vested in the GWR in 1898.

 

91*   A Sheffield & Midland Railway 12” roundhead fusee movement wall clock, the face lettered “S & M Ry No.2 W. McFerran, Victoria St, Manchester”. The cabinet bears its “LMS 17374” oval brass plate. A label inside reads “New Mills Central B.O (LNW & GC & Mid) Return Via Guide Bridge”. Complete and working. Note The Sheffield & Midland Railway was a joint Committee of the MS & LR and Midland Railway to operate the line from Romiley to Ashburys and others. New Mills Central was on its successor GC & Mid Joint line.

 

92*   A Great Northern Railway double-faced 12” dial drop-case fusee movement wall clock with attractive mahogany veneer cabinets. The face is lettered “GNR 181A J J Stockall & Sons Ltd London”. With a side mounting wall bracket. In full working order A rare double clock indeed, from Havenhouse waiting room on the Skegness Branch.

 

93*   A Southern Railway enamel POSTERBOARD heading lettered “Southern Electric Rochester” (with electric flash). Flangeless, 53”x12”, some chip restoration to look good.

 

94     A Great Central Railway train-splitting lamp brass-plated “GCR 3744 Kirton Lindsey”, and stamped “3744”. Complete with vessel (stamped GCR); burner; reflector; and red bullseye lens.

 

95     A South Eastern & Chatham Railway station lamp with a blue etched glass name tablet “HORSMONDEN”, and opal glass tops. The name tablet is repaired. 36” tall. In original, complete condition. An ex SER station, on the Hawkhurst Branch from Paddock Wood, that opened in 1892 and closed 1961.

 

96*   A LNER enamel Lamp Tablet “LONGBENTON”. Chocolate and cream, 16”x5” with a wide top flange. Quite a bit of restoration. An ex LNER station north-east of Newcastle opened in 1947; closed in 1978, and reopened in 1980 by the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive.

 

97     A GWR cast-iron full Company title gate notice. 29½”x11”. Face-repainted only.

98*   A South Eastern & Chatham Railway Walkers Rotary Train Describer (transmitting version). Like a large clock with spoke type handles akin to a ships wheel. The brass-rimmed face contains 12 circular ivorine plates variously lettered “Brighton Lewes Reading Tonbridge”. On its original wooden shelf bearing a shield shape enamel plate lettered in black “To Redhill”. VGC. (See Lot 346).

 

99*   A Lynton & Barnstaple Railway enamel POSTERBOARD-HEADING plate lettered blue on white “LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY” (on 2 lines). By the Falkirk Iron Company. 20½”x5”, some edge restoration.

 

100* A coffee-table incorporating a circular enamel plate (16½” diameter) displaying the Southern Railway flag, identical to the centre of the Merchant Navy Class nameplate “CHANNEL PACKET”. Mounted on three legs, 14½” tall. The Southern Railway made a third enamel crest for use in these coffee tables to present at the naming ceremony of the locomotive. This one was recovered from the Divisional Shipping Manager’s Office, Dover.

Note The O, W & W opened in 1850 to operate the line from Oxford to Wolverhampton; was amalgamated with the West Midland Railway in 1860 which in turn amalgamated with the GWR in 1863.

110* A Southern Railway enamel TARGET “RYE”, on its original backing-board. VGC. The smallest SR Target produced being only 14” wide. Moreover this TARGET HAS NEVER BEEN OFFERED FOR SALE IN AUCTION. From the ex SER station, on the Hastings to Ashford line, opened in 1851.

120* A LMS aluminium ‘Hawkseye’ station sign “TYNDRUM LOWER” (“Lower” is painted on). In original BR(Sc) blue and white paint. 48” wide. From the ex Caledonian Railway station, between Crianlarich and Oban, opened as “Tyndrum” in 1877 (to replace an earlier station nearby) and renamed by BR in 1953.

 

121* A Kent & East Sussex Railway OWNERS PLATE lettered “Kent and East Sussex Railway Company”. Oval cast-iron, 10”x6”, repainted a long time ago. There is some anecdotal evidence that these plates were carried by locomotives as well as rolling stock. It probably dates from 1905 when the Railway was renamed from The Rother Valley Railway.

 

122* A North London Railway full Company title coat of arms transfer mounted on board. 17”x19½”. Mint. A very rare device that embellished the teak finished passenger coaches.  The quartered shield depicts the East India Dock Company’s anchor; Birmingham; London; and the entrance gateway to the West India Import Dock (opened in 1802).

 

123* A Southern Railway enamel sign “Parcels, Cloakroom, Registered Baggage, Telegrams & Enquiries” (on 3 lines). Flangeless, 48”x12”, some restored chips mainly to the edge.

 

124* A Cambrian Railways full case station lamp bearing a paper name label lettered white on blue “ERWOOD”. The vessel is brass-plated “Cam Rlys”; burner; glass funnel; and the whole in a cradle 33” tall. Note Erwood station, between Builth Road and Ledbury, opened in 1864 and closed in 1962.

 

125  A South Eastern & Chatham Railway large and heavy POCKET-WATCH, the back engraved “SE & CR 1319”. The face is lettered “Waltham USA”. An engraved brass 15 jewel American Waltham Watch Co. movement. In very good condition and full working order.

128* A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signalbox double-dial wood-cased block instrument trafolite-plated “MIDGE HALL”. The top is stamped “LNWR” (after relocation). In good, original condition. Note Midge Hall was a signalbox on the Preston-Liverpool line. The station closed in 1961.

137* A North Eastern Railway opal glass lamp name tablet etched in blue “COPMANTHORPE”. Wedged, 12¾”x2¾”. A station between York and Church Fenton opened in 1839 and closed in 1959.          

 

138* A Lancashire & Yorkshire/Dearne Valley Railway quart oil bottle stamped “DVR” and bearing a copper plate stamped “DVR. Grimethorpe”. A brass screw cap and chain, and in very good original condition. (See Lot 12).

 

139  A Great Northern Railway leather CASHBAG with a brass plate engraved “GNR Leicester”. In good condition. Note Leicester Belgrave Road station opened in 1882 and closed in 1962.

 

140* A Great Central Railway Appleton’s Patent 3-aspect HANDLAMP, the body bearing a huge copper plate “GCR 7055 GUNNESS” and stamped “GCR”. It also bears a rectangular brass plate stamped “Appleton’s 1563C Patent”. The brass top propeller is stamped “Appletons Patent”. A GCR (stamped) vessel, LMS brass/ceramic burner and reflector. Gunness station opened in 1869 between Scunthorpe and Althorpe. It was renamed “Gunness And Burringham” and closed in 1916. An astonishing survivor!

 

141* A GWR brass single-line key token, the circular end engraved “Possession Of This Key Authorises Ganger To Occupy The Line Between Pembroke-Manorbier”. Polished.

 

142* A Southern Railway enamel plate from the front of a 1 penny platform ticket machine. Lettered “Southern Railway  - Platform Ticket To Be Given Up On Leaving The Platform” in black and red lettering with a black pointing hand. 6½”x30¼”, some edge chipping.

149* A Mersey Railway full title enamel sign lettered red on white “Mersey Railway. Danger. Electrified Lines. Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted”. Flangeless, 25”x20”, vgc. Note The Mersey Railway opened in 1886 to operate a line from Liverpool to Birkenhead. It remained independent until nationalized in 1948.

 

150* A WORKSPLATE “Great Northern Railway Co. Doncaster No. 821 Makers 1899”. As carried by the GNR C2 Class 4-4-2T, GNR 1510 that emerged from Works in May 1899 with condensing apparatus, which was removed in September 1921. It became LNER 4510 Class C12 from September 1925; 7368 from October 1946; BR 67368 from March 1950, and was finally withdrawn in October 1955. Oval cast brass, 10¾”x6½”, polished and repainted.

169* A Great North of Scotland Railway large 3-aspect HANDLAMP, the body stamped “GNSR” and bearing a rectangular brass plate lettered “Great North of Scotland Railway Company”. The reducing-cone, also stamped “GNSR”, is brass-plated “MORTLACH SIDING”. An original GNSR (stamped) vessel; LMS brass/ceramic burner, copper reflector and all glasses. A location between Drummuir and Dufftown on the Keith Junction to Craigellachie line.

 

170  A London Brighton & South Coast Railway handlamp oil filler stamped “LBSCR” and plated “SOUTHWATER”. With cap, and in original condition. Southwater, between Christs Hospital and West Grinstead, opened in 1861 and closed in 1966.

 

171* A Barry Railway cast brass oval ARMBAND lettered “BR.4. Dock Porter”. With straps and in fine, original condition. From the Dai Woodham collection. Note The Barry Railway was renamed from the Barry Dock & Railway in 1891 and was grouped into the GWR in 1922.

 

172* A Rhymney Railway small framed cast brass crest from the Eric Mountford collection. It illustrates the full Company title coat of arms and is 9½” square. It was cast from a drawing of 1901 by Daniel Meredith, the Company’s Chief Draughtsman, and is stamped “DM. 1901”. In a wooden frame 13½” square. Only 2 or 3 of these crests were made. Note The Rhymney Railway opened in 1858 to operate a line from Cardiff to Rhymney, and branches. It was grouped into the GWR in 1922.

 

173  A GWR 4-pen ‘landmine’ saltglaze inkwell clearly impressed “GWR” on the side. 4½” diameter. Two chips underneath only.

 

174* A North British Railway double-sided enamel station wall-sign lettered on both sides “Booking Window”. In an ornate cast iron frame and with its integral bracket. 36”x14”.

 

175* A Great North of Scotland Railway circular steel Train Following Board stamped “CULTER” on one side, and lettered “CULTER TRAIN FOLLOWING” in original cream on red paint on both sides. 18” diameter, plus its top ‘carrying-handle’. Culter station, on the Royal Deeside Ballater Branch, opened in 1853 and closed in 1966.
